The passing of Sir Harry Gibbs in late June has been widely recognised by the obituaries recording his distinguished service to the nation as a barrister (1939 - 1961), a Member of the Faculty of Law, University of Queensland (1954 -1967), a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland (1961 - 1967), and the Federal Court of Bankruptcy and the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory (1967 - 1970), Justice of the High Court (1970 - 1981) and Chief Justice of Australia (1981 - 1987).
