Scott Treatt, CTA, CEO, The Tax Institute
Scott brings a wealth of experience in tax practice, tax administration, and leadership to the role of Chief Executive Officer of The Tax Institute. Scott’s career as a Chartered Tax Advisor has spanned large and mid-tier professional firms and Government in technical and leadership roles. A dedicated member of The Tax Institute for over 20 years, Scott has contributed significantly to the knowledge of members and the betterment of Australia's taxation and superannuation system overall.
Scott was previously the General Manager, Tax Policy and Advocacy, at The Tax Institute, leading its tax technical team for three years. During this time, he proactively enhanced the team’s capabilities, orchestrated a successful overhaul of the various committees and councils to improve the representation of our members, built strong relationships with key stakeholders across the industry, academia, and all levels of Government, and drove the Institute’s growing influence in policy and advocacy circles. He is a passionate advocate for holistic tax policy reform and is a visionary business leader known for his forward-thinking approach.
A commitment to strategic cross-team collaboration, good governance, a strong dedication to member empowerment and development, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence in every aspect of the business characterises Scott’s leadership style. Julie Abdalla FTI
Julie Abdalla, FTI, is the Head of Tax & Legal at The Tax Institute. Julie has practiced in the tax teams of Big 4 and top tier law firms in Sydney and Melbourne, and at an international law firm in London. She has expertise in law and policy across a broad range of taxes and industry sectors. Julie is driven to achieve holistic tax reform, and has the depth of knowledge to advocate for members and the betterment of the tax system. Julie leads the Tax Policy & Advocacy team and has oversight of The Tax Institute’s National Technical and State Taxes Committees comprised of over 150 volunteers. She represents The Tax Institutes in several external forums including the ATO’s National Tax Liaison Group and the Australian Treasury’s Tax Treaty Advisory Panel. Julie provides strategic and technical advice to Government and other stakeholders, and has appeared as an expert witness in several Senate Committee inquiries. Julie has been recognised throughout the profession for her leadership and excellence in tax. She has been awarded a number of scholarships and awards including the International Bar Association Taxes Committee Scholarship, the Australian Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Award in Tax, and a prize from the University of Oxford. Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctor from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne, part of which was completed at the University of Oxford. - Current at 12 August 2025Abhishek Shekhawat FTI
Abhishek Shekhawat, ATI, is an Associate in The Tax Institute’s Tax Policy and Advocacy Team, and an adept tax lawyer with a passion for all things tax. Having worked with the ATO, Abhishek brings extensive experience in tax administration, law and policy design, and a range of tax technical areas expertise. He holds a Bachelor of Law and Commerce from UNSW and is looking to continue his pursuit of knowledge with a Master of Laws. Abhishek has detailed knowledge of the law design framework, and a passion for developing workable solutions to numerous shortcomings of the current tax system. His current role will allow him to follow this passion whilst supporting The Tax Institute’s ongoing policy and advocacy work including the preparation of submissions and consultations to key external stakeholders. - Current at 24 November 2022This was presented at National Superannuation Conference .
