Running a tax dispute at the AAT paper

What do you need to do to represent or assist your client when a meritorious tax objection is disallowed? This semi-scripted “play” takes place before and during a dispute at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and will explain and show what happens behind the doors at the AAT.

Rodney Dunne
Rod is a Partner with Donaldson Walsh practicing in the area of general commercial law, specialising in taxation, revenue and superannuation law with particular interest in wills and estate planning, business succession planning, risk management and asset protection. In June 2005, Rod was appointed as a part-time Senior Member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Adelaide, acting in the General Administrative, Veterans' Appeals and Taxation Appeals Divisions of the Tribunal. - Current at 27 February 2007Helen Lacey
Helen has qualifications in social work and law in addition to being a trained mediator. Her work experience includes being a member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, the Guardianship Board and the Public Housing Appeal Panel. Until her recent retirement, Arlene was a Barrister at the South Australian Bar for 17 years. Prior to this she spent 8 years at the Australian Government Solicitor's Office, and several years at the ATO and the Commonwealth Ombudsman's office. At the Bar she appeared and advised in a wide range of Commonwealth and State tax disputes concerning income tax, CGT, GST, stamp duty, payroll tax, land tax and other tax issues. Arlene is experienced in acting for the Commissioner of Taxation and for the range of taxpayers who were in dispute with the revenue authorities or who needed advice on how tax law applies in their case. She has a passion for legal education, especially in tax and trust law. She was awarded life membership of The Tax Institute in 2010 particularly for her work over many years in organising, promoting and providing education through The Tax Institute. She has written a vast number of papers and articles and is a highly sought after speaker.
